Osteopathy at Breathing Space
Osteopathy is a system of manual medicine that diagnoses, treats and helps to prevent problems arising from and within the neuro-musculo-skeletal system (muscles, bones, joints, organs, connective tissue and nerves).
It requires a detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology and methods of clinical investigation on the part of the practitioner.
- Osteopathy is a safe and natural approach to health care
- Patients of any age can be treated effectively for a variety of health problems
- Every year over 6,000,000 patients in Great Britain consult an osteopath
- Every osteopath is registered with the General Osteopathic Council
- Every osteopath is properly insured
- diagnose and treat complaints occurring due to injury, stress, disease and accidents
- aim to enable the musculoskeletal system to work as efficiently as possible by disencumbering it from unnecessary stressors
- harness the body’s innate healing processes in the search for health and normal function
- believe a caring approach and attention to individual needs is paramount
- refer patients on to a registered medical practitioner when appropriate
Training to become an osteopath is a rigorous and demanding course lasting at least 4 years. All osteopaths undertake a programme of continuous professional development.
- Is always appropriate to the patient’s age and condition
- Is available to all age groups
- Is based on an osteopathic diagnosis
- Is always carried out with the consent of the patient
Different techniques, eg cranial, soft tissue, structural manipulation are applied as necessary and appropriate

- A physical examination given
- You will be asked to remove some outer clothing and perform a simple series of movement tests
- Points of weakness, strain or specific injury will be identified
- The musculo-skeletal assessment will be considered alongside lifestyle factors
- A treatment plan will be determined and initiated
- Breath is Life
- Every cell in our bodies respires in its own space and at its own pace, according to its anatomical location and physiological needs and communicates with your whole self as well as the external environment
- The demands of our modern lives often cramp the demand of our bodies for the time and space to breathe in the fullest and widest sense of the word
- Osteopathic treatment aims to release held tensions, which restrict the complete expression of ourselves in the world
- Chronically held tension can result in a less efficient use of our mind and body, a build-up of toxic waste, a less efficient metabolism, acute, painful symptoms and eventually the onset of chronic disease-states
- Breathing-space is a natural “given”. We steal from ourselves. We can give ourselves back what we need
The Breathing Space Osteopathic Practice is patient centred and makes no exaggerated claims to solve what can be complex and serious problems affecting your health and well-being.
However, because osteopathy treats the whole not the part, individuals not just symptoms and because you can expect professionalism and clinical awareness, you will be heard, supported, treated appropriately or where necessary, referred on, whatever disease or symptom picture is presented.
Many chronic and acute cases can be addressed effectively alongside ongoing medical treatment and drug based regimes, even though it might be the ultimate goal to allow the innate health mechanism to regain its control over your vitality and well-being.
The Breathing Space Osteopathic Practice aims to:
- Treat the whole person
- See individuals, not just symptoms
- Encourage each person's natural tendency to growth and fulfilment
- Honour the whole person and that which is holy in each
You can expect:
- Professionalism and clinical awareness
- A drug free treatment tailored to your needs
- Unconditional acceptance and positive regard
